The U.S. Navy is celebrating its 246th birthday. After being founded in 1775, October 13 was officially designated as the branch’s birthday.
This year’s theme is “resilient and ready,” which officials say represents the history of the Navy and its ability to shake off disaster. This includes, most recently, the coronavirus pandemic.
The day is meant to show appreciation and encourage pride in the naval service. The navy’s secretary delivered a message, thanking all sailors and their families for their service.
“The future of our Navy and our nation is in your hands,” stated Carlos del Toro, U.S. Navy Secretary . “Thank you for your service, and may God bless you and your families as we begin out 246th year. Happy birthday shipmates.”
