British Prime Minister Boris Johnson addressed Parliament after facing criticism for allegedly hosting a party during the stringent lockdown last winter.

“I apologize for the impression that has been given that stop and Downing Street take this less than seriously. I’m sick with myself and furious for that,” said Johnson.

While Downing Street has continued to deny any such party took place, saying it was made up as a joke for a mock news conference, he apologized on Wednesday for the perception left to the public. Opposition Leader Keir Starmer said he believes the party did take place and has pressed the prime minister to own up to it.

“The prime minister has been caught red handed,” said Starmer. “Why doesn’t he end the investigation right now by just admitting it?” Starmer went on to add, “even the prime minister must understand the damage he’s done to his credibility in enforcing the rules now and in the future.”

Johnson also faced backlash from members of his own Conservative Party, with high ranking officials demanding everyone who attended the party be fired.
